HOW THE PRINTS FOR THE NEW REBORN PART 2 COLLECTION WERE CREATED: BEHIND THE SCENES.
Interview with contemporary artist Jan about collaboration with Freak Butik.

— Absolutely right! Let's get closer to the present: what works and projects have you been involved in recently?
JAN:
— Hi, yes. I'll introduce myself again — my name is Jan (12monkeys).

Some time ago, I made my own boards with a buddy: lime, fish, longs. But there are problems with maple trees in Russia, and all this turned out to be very problematic and not liquid. That's why we scored.

I also made my own T-shirts, but it was a super long time ago. At that time I didn't really fumble and riveted it is unclear what.

Of course, I'm doing something else now. But you're going to have a question for me about that, aren't you?

FB:
- Hello! Let's get acquainted first: will you tell us a little about your past?

JAN:
— I'll probably start with those with whom I worked:

"St. Petersburg Shield"
"Bloody Mary Bar"
"Sticky Stuff"

And a lot of other people, but I can't remember now.

Regarding the projects, I can highlight a few cool ones:

I was thrilled to collaborate with a musical artist
Warlord Colossus

It so happened that I heard one of his singles, found it in insta and signed up. And then we wrote to each other at the same time, as we both wanted to cooperate.

In the end, I just drew a print for him.

Because his music is just oh ***.

I never posted this print, and the video of the creation, too. Because I forgot. The studio even sent me a track so that I could use it in the video. I just remembered now. Here I am.... Well, that's fine.

And, of course, the latest collaboration with Freak gives me a buzz, on the new collection "Re:born Part 2".

By the way, the work is still ongoing.

JAN:
— Yes, it was May 16 last year. The exhibition was held in the space of the "Line"

There were several of my works in vector and raster graphics. And I also collected some kind of Cthulhu with tentacles… It turned out to be a kind of hefty paperweight-a night light, but it looked cool.

I wanted to subscribe to other exhibitions after that. But I realized that I forgot to varnish all my paintings. Heh. The workshop will be free in a week, and I will definitely pay.

FB:
There is information that you took part in the exhibition "Gestalt" in St. Petersburg. What did you exhibit with?

— We've been working with Freak for 5 years, probably not sure. I can't count.

Marina and Milana, the creators of the brand, have been telling me for a long time that I'm sick of doing one drawing at a time. And they offered to stir up a full-fledged collection.

But somehow we all did not start until Marina threw off one photo that she took on her camera.

— There was a picture of Alex's girlfriend hugging some guy.

Initially, we thought to portray this pair as yin and yang — two objects that cannot coexist together and communicate with each other.

At that moment I was reading Mr. Lovecraft...

And this prompted me to think: "Alexa is a beautiful girl, and the guy is nothing. We need to turn them into ugly-anthropomorphic-Cthulhu-fish. Just because. Let them be beautiful somewhere else." That's how the "Devilfish" print turned out.

But it was a completely different collection.

We have not made any edits, but a brand new game Red dead Redemption 2 has been released. And I played for a whole year, scoring on drawing.

Let's move on to the sweetest thing — to work with Freak Butik.
How long have you been cooperating with the brand? How did your communication begin?

How long have you been cooperating with the brand? How did your communication begin?
— Yes. The collection was supposed to come out, so after a while we continued. Marina threw me the word "Reborn" in Korean, Japanese and Chinese.

And I, in response, suggested using Oni or Hanja masks for the Japanese inscription, because they are beautiful, recognizable and fun to draw.

Here it is necessary to clarify that we are working without a clear task. The girls, mostly, just throw ideas, I suggest something and draw. And then we look at the big picture and make edits.

So, one of the prints in the collection will be "Killer Whale Samurai".

When drawing it, I was a little stunned: my misunderstanding of the finished picture was superimposed on the impossibility of a clear explanation.

To be honest, I still don't really understand. But it turned out very cool. Even considering the fact that at the end of my work, my computer went down, and Marina made up the drawing herself.

— This is a fairly large-scale, therefore, a difficult project. Drawing 3 large prints, 3 medium and 3 small ones took many nights without sleep and required a lot of red bulls.

Once Marina and I even had a fight about it. But gently enough.
Oh well. After all, the collection came out super-cool. And this is the most important thing.

— Now I am preparing designer sticker packs for a new collection. Freak pays great attention to even such small details. That's cool.

— Was it difficult to work on a new collection? Have there been any disagreements?
— The prints are drawn, the main work is done. But you mentioned that you're still working on the collection. What are you doing at the moment?

— I like working with Freak.

First of all, fucking clothes.

Secondly, I made good friends not only with Marina and Milan, but also with the whole party of "neon vampires". Plus, my old friends work there.

And, thirdly, the guys never charged me for my character. Sometimes I'm rude, I communicate with jokes and sarcasm, I do strange things... But I was accepted like this. Perhaps some of them even like it.
